Spain/Iberian Blackout: What Happened and Why It Matters

A Night (and Day) in the Dark

On April 28, 2025, millions of people across Spain and Portugal suddenly found themselves without power.

Imagine: trains stopped in their tracks, traffic lights out, phones and internet down, even ATMs refusing to work. The blackout lasted up to 10 hours in most places and even longer for some. Sadly, the outage also led to tragic incidents, with at least seven people in Spain and one in Portugal losing their lives in related accidents.

What Actually Happened?

  • Around Noon: First signs of trouble—some grid wobbles, but nothing too serious.

  • A Few Minutes Later: More wobbles, but still under control.

  • Just After 12:30: A big chunk of power generation in southern Spain suddenly drops out. The grid’s frequency and voltage go haywire.

  • Seconds Later: Automatic safety systems kick in, but it’s too late the whole system goes down, and the lights go out.

• What Was the Grid Doing?

  • Spain was actually exporting power to Portugal, France, and even Morocco at the time.

  • Over half the power was coming from solar energy—pretty impressive!

  • Electricity prices were even a bit negative.

What’s Definitely NOT to Blame?

The investigations have made it clear: some of the early rumours and worries about the blackout simply aren’t true. Here’s what’s been ruled out so far:

  There’s no evidence of any hacking or cyberattack on the power grid.

• Single Power Plant Failure:
  It wasn’t just one power plant or facility that caused the whole problem.

• Too Much Renewable Energy:
  While some people wondered if relying on solar and wind was the issue, experts confirm it wasn’t the main culprit.

• Government Experiments:
  Claims that Spain was testing how far it could push the grid with renewables have been firmly denied by authorities.

• Simple Overload or Short Circuit:
  The blackout wasn’t caused by a straightforward overload or a single short circuit.
